How to use motorola walkie talkie - XOTODREM-Radio

Most people's first instinct when picking up a walkie talkie is to press PTT and start talking then wonder in confusion why nobody can hear them. In reality, following the correct startup process is the foundation of smooth communication. Take the Motorola Talkabout T42, a popular consumer model, as an example: first confirm the batteries are properly installed and charged, then press and hold the Power/Menu button to turn it on. The top knob typically doubles as a power switch and volume control set it loud enough to hear clearly above ambient noise. .

Some Motorola models also feature a side shortcut button that, when briefly pressed, triggers a voice announcement of the current channel number. The indicator light uses different colors to distinguish high, medium, and low battery levels. This small design touch is incredibly useful outdoors no need to stare at a screen; a quick glance at the light tells you whether it's time to swap batteries.

Walkie-talkie communication is based on a single fundamental principle: both devices must function within identical parameters. The first layer of matching is the channel (Usually 1 through 16); however, dialing to the same channel alone is insufficient. Several Motorola models support an "interference eliminator code" (basically a Privacy Code or Sub-code) that adds a CTCSS tone squelch filter to the main channel. Devices will only activate their speakers and respond to an incoming signal if they have a corresponding sub-tone.

This is why, even when we're on the same channel, we can't hear each other. It's because one device has sub-tone enabled, while the other hasn't. But don't worry, the solution is much simpler than you might think: simply set the interference cancellation code to "0" or "off" to restore normal reception. But if you are using Motorola Talkabout T42 like me and want to turn on 16, then you can follow the steps below

How to Turn on the Motorola Talkabout T42's 16 Channel

The Motorola T42 walkie-talkie works on the PMR446 frequency band, which doesn't need a license. Its hardware can handle all 16 channels and 121 privacy sub-codes, however only channels 1 through 8 are open at first. Motorola built this up on purpose at the production to follow wireless radio rules in different countries and regions. It is not a problem with the device. For example, systems sold in that market have channels 916 closed since Russian law only allows 8 channels. You can utilize this with confidence once you know this. But if you really need to turn on all 16 channels on your Motorola T42, I found some methods in the official user manual that you can try

How to Activate Step by Step

The official owner's manual and Motorola's official help page both say that the following steps are correct:

After turning on the device, press and hold the Menu button until the channel number on the screen starts to flash. This means the device is in channel selection edit mode

Press and hold both the "+" and "" buttons at the same time for around three seconds. Don't let go of any key until you hear a beep that confirms the action.

The screen will briefly show "16 CH" to let you know that the unlock worked. You can then use "+" or "" to scroll up to channel 9.

Can I use Motorola walkie-talkies with other brands?

Walkie talkies from different brands are not inherently incompatible, but you need to manually align a few important parameters. For instance, setting both devices to Narrow FM (NFM, 12.5 kHz channel spacing), which greatly reduces adjacent-channel interference and is currently the widely accepted standard for consumer radio bands, is the first step in connecting a Baofeng with a Motorola. Additionally, some Motorola models have factory-preset CTCSS tone frequencies that are not plug-and-play on programmable devices like Baofeng radios.

To solve this, experienced users read and extract the Motorola's CTCSS tone settings using PC programming software like CHIRP, then manually enter them into the Baofeng for an exact match. If that sounds like too much work, the easiest solution is simply to switch off sub-tones on both sides and communicate on basic frequencies. You minimize interference rejection in order to maximize cross-brand compatibility.

It's interesting to note that some friends and I still have the issue of the transmission cutting out at the beginning even when the channel and sub-tone are completely matched. Do you wonder why this occurs as well? This is normal, so don't worry. When the PTT button is hit, the walkie-talkie takes around 0.5 seconds to recognize the received CTCSS tone signal, confirm the match, and then turn on the speaker. Unfortunately, your friend won't be able to hear what you said before if you start chatting as soon as you press the button.

The correct procedure is to press PTT, count for 0.5 seconds, and then speak. To keep the channel open for a response, let go of the button as soon as you finish speaking. It will undoubtedly be very smooth if you use it in accordance with the procedure I described above.
